HPL Xpress Southwest

The first of what is now called HPLX (Houston Public Library Express) is a hybridized version containing a combination of digital and print media that will serve as a transition from a book based collection to a computer based one. Located in an existing city operated multi-service center, the orginal 5,000 square foot prototype program has been paired down into a 3,600 square foot mixed media facility in Southwest Houston.

The custom computer workstations were designed by the architect, and can now be provided to the city almost 'turn-key' by a local fabricator for future HPLXs. Overhead, conduit caries data cable from the server in the back-of-house to each workstation, thereby visually expressing the transfer of data. Environmental strtegies include the use of rubber flooring, homosote and zoned low voltage lighting to reflect the city's new commitment to sustainability.
